Precision surface grinding process — close-tolerance finishing

01 · The Machine

The 618 MSPE is our precision surface grinder — a magnetic-chuck grinder that holds flatness to ±0.0005" and delivers surface finishes in the 32 Ra μin range. Grinding lives in-house because the parts that need it — fixtures, tooling components, gauge plates — are usually the parts that need to ship next.

02 · Why It's Here

We chose this grinder for the work that follows the mill. After the DMV-400 cuts a fixture or a tool block, the mating surfaces need to be parallel within a few tenths and finished to a specific Ra. Surface grinding is the only process that hits both specs together. Keeping it in-house cuts the lead time on a fixture from a week to a day.

03 · How It Runs

Most of what runs on this machine is internal — fixtures and tooling we make for our own laser, brake, and mill jobs. The same precision is available to clients for parallels, gauge plates, mating surfaces, and any precision-flat work that needs tolerances tighter than milling alone can hit. Hardened steel up to 65 HRC grinds without giving up flatness.

Common Questions

About the Haeger 618 MSPE.

The questions procurement and engineering teams ask before they spec a job to this machine.

±0.0005" on properly fixtured parts up to the 6" × 18" chuck size. For longer parts we step-grind in registered passes; flatness across the joints holds to ±0.001". Verified on a granite surface plate.

32 Ra μin on hardened steel and tool steel with appropriate wheel selection. Down to 16 Ra on softer materials with finishing wheels. We document the achieved Ra per part on jobs where surface finish is spec'd.

Tool steel (D2, A2, S7, O1, M2 HSS), hardened steel up to 65 HRC, mild steel, stainless 304/316/17-4 PH, cast iron, and carbide. Soft non-ferrous materials (aluminum, brass) are typically better suited to milling — we'll route them to the DMV-400 instead.

If your part needs flatness tighter than ±0.001" or surface finish under 64 Ra, the mill alone can't reliably hit it. Grinding is also the right call when the material is harder than mill cutters can practically machine (above ~40 HRC). For loose-tolerance parts in soft materials, milling is faster and cheaper.

Yes — hardened steel up to Rockwell C 65 grinds clean on the appropriate wheel. We keep wheels for D2, A2, M2 HSS, and case-hardened steel in stock. Soft-state milling followed by heat-treat and finish-grind is a common workflow for production tooling.

Fixtures and tooling components ship in 3-7 days when the design is locked. Production parts that include grinding as a secondary op run on the broader job schedule (typical 1-2 weeks). Rush surface-grinding work (resurfacing, gauge plates) often turns same-week.

Yes — most surface grinding work supports our own laser, brake, and mill jobs, but we also take grinding work from outside customers across the Greater Toronto Area. Pickup at our Brampton shop or delivery within the GTA. Lead time depends on shop load — typically 3-7 working days.
